Definition
Lumber that has been dried in a heated kiln to reduce its moisture content, typically to 19% or below. Kiln drying is distinct from heat treatment for ISPM-15, though some kilns can achieve both purposes simultaneously. Kiln-dried lumber (marked KD) resists mold, warping, and shrinking better than green or air-dried lumber. While KD lumber is preferred for pallet construction, kiln drying alone does not satisfy ISPM-15 requirements unless the specific temperature and duration thresholds are met.

Heat Treatment
A phytosanitary treatment method approved under ISPM-15 in which wood packaging material is heated until the core temperature reaches a minimum of 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least 30 continuous minutes. Heat treatment kills insects and pathogens without chemicals, making it the preferred method for treating export pallets. Treated wood is stamped with the HT mark as part of the ISPM-15 compliance marking.
ISPM-15
International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, an international standard developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that governs the treatment of wood packaging materials used in international trade. ISPM-15 requires that wood packaging be debarked and treated by an approved method — primarily heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation — to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases across borders.
Board Foot
A unit of lumber volume measurement equal to a board that is 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). Board feet are the standard unit for measuring and pricing lumber in the pallet industry. The board footage of a pallet determines its lumber cost, and optimizing pallet designs to minimize board footage without sacrificing performance is a key cost reduction strategy.
Deck Board
The flat boards that form the top and bottom surfaces of a pallet. Top deck boards provide the platform on which goods are placed, while bottom deck boards (also called bottom boards) provide stability and allow the pallet to be stored on flat surfaces. Deck board thickness, width, and spacing directly affect a pallet's load capacity and suitability for different applications.
