A

Air-Dried

Lumber that has been seasoned by exposure to ambient air rather than in a kiln. Air-dried lumber is stacked with spacers (stickers) to allow airflow and is left to dry naturally over a period of weeks or months. While air drying is less expensive than kiln drying, it produces lumber with higher and less consistent moisture content, typically around 19-25%. Air-dried lumber alone does not meet ISPM-15 requirements for export pallets.

Automated Nailing

The use of pneumatic or hydraulic nailing machines to assemble pallets at high speed on a production line. Automated nailing systems use jigs and fixtures to position pallet components precisely, then drive nails in pre-programmed patterns. These systems dramatically increase production throughput and nail placement consistency compared to hand nailing. Modern automated nailing lines can produce hundreds of pallets per hour with minimal manual labor.

B

Band Saw

A power saw with a continuous looped blade used in the pallet industry to cut lumber to size and to disassemble pallets for repair or recycling. Band saws are essential equipment in pallet manufacturing and remanufacturing operations, offering efficient straight cuts through hardwood and softwood lumber. Portable band saw mills are also used to process raw logs into pallet-grade lumber on-site.

Bark

The outer protective layer of a tree trunk or branch. Under ISPM-15 regulations, wood packaging materials used in international trade must be debarked, meaning bark must be removed before treatment. Small residual pieces of bark may remain if they are less than 3 cm wide or, if wider, have a total surface area of less than 50 square centimeters. Bark removal is critical because it can harbor insects and pathogens.

Batten

A thin, narrow strip of wood used as a secondary structural element in pallet or crate construction. Battens can reinforce joints, secure panels, or serve as spacers between components. In crating, battens are often nailed across boards to hold them together and prevent warping. They are typically thinner and narrower than standard deck boards.

Bevel

An angled cut or edge on a piece of lumber, similar to but distinct from a chamfer. In pallet construction, bevels are applied to board edges to reduce splintering, improve fork entry, and minimize damage to products or packaging that contacts the pallet edges. Beveled edges create a smoother profile that is less likely to catch on conveyor systems or automated handling equipment.

Binder Bar

A metal or heavy-duty plastic bar used to clamp and secure loads on flatbed trailers during transportation. Binder bars work in conjunction with straps or chains to prevent palletized cargo from shifting during transit. In the pallet logistics chain, proper use of binder bars is essential for safe transport of stacked pallets and heavy unit loads on open trailers.

Bird Mouth

A triangular notch cut into a pallet stringer to allow fork entry from the stringer side. The bird mouth cut is V-shaped or triangular, as opposed to a standard rectangular notch. This style of notching is less common than rectangular notches but is used in some pallet designs where specific fork clearance profiles are required. The term derives from the resemblance of the cut to an open bird beak.

Block Pallet

A pallet constructed using blocks of solid wood or composite material between the top and bottom deck boards, typically with nine blocks arranged in a 3x3 pattern. Block pallets offer true four-way entry, allowing forklifts and pallet jacks to access the pallet from all four sides. They are generally stronger and more durable than stringer pallets, making them common in pooling programs and heavy-duty applications.

Board Foot

A unit of lumber volume measurement equal to a board that is 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). Board feet are the standard unit for measuring and pricing lumber in the pallet industry. The board footage of a pallet determines its lumber cost, and optimizing pallet designs to minimize board footage without sacrificing performance is a key cost reduction strategy.

Bottom Deck

The lower surface of a pallet, consisting of boards that run along the underside and rest on the floor or racking surface. Bottom deck boards provide structural support, distribute the load across floor surfaces, and protect products on pallets stacked below. The configuration and number of bottom deck boards directly affect a pallet's stability, rackability, and compatibility with conveyor systems.

Butt Joint

A joint formed when two pieces of lumber are placed end-to-end without any overlap or interlocking mechanism. In pallet construction, butt joints occur where deck boards meet or where stringers are spliced together. Butt joints rely entirely on fasteners (nails, screws, or staples) for their strength, making them the simplest but weakest type of wood joint. Proper fastening is critical for butt joint integrity in pallets.

Cantilever Rack

A warehouse racking system with horizontal arms extending from vertical columns, designed for storing long, bulky, or irregularly shaped items. Cantilever racks are used in the pallet and lumber industry to store raw lumber, finished pallet components, and other long materials that do not fit well on standard pallet racking. The open-front design allows easy loading and unloading with forklifts.

Captive Pallet

A pallet that remains within a closed-loop supply chain, circulating between a defined set of facilities and never leaving the controlled system. Captive pallets are typically higher quality and built to last many trips, as the cost is amortized over their long service life. They are common in automotive manufacturing, beverage distribution, and internal warehouse operations where pallet tracking and recovery is managed tightly.

Chamfer

A beveled or angled cut on the bottom edges of the lead boards on a pallet. Chamfers create a gradual transition that makes it easier for forklift forks and pallet jack forks to enter the pallet openings. The chamfer acts as a guide, reducing the chance of fork impact damage to the bottom deck boards. Most commercial pallets include chamfers on the bottom lead boards as a standard design feature.

Chamfered Deck Board

A deck board that has had its edges beveled or chamfered to create a smooth, angled profile. Chamfered deck boards reduce the risk of product damage by eliminating sharp edges that could tear packaging or scratch goods. They also improve fork entry when used on the bottom deck and reduce splintering during handling. Chamfered deck boards are commonly specified for pallets used in food and pharmaceutical supply chains.

CHEP

Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool, the world's largest pallet pooling company, recognizable by its distinctive blue pallets. CHEP operates a pallet rental and logistics management service where customers rent pallets rather than purchasing them. CHEP pallets are block pallets built to high quality standards, and the company manages collection, inspection, repair, and redistribution. CHEP serves primarily the grocery, retail, and consumer goods supply chains.

Closed Loop

A pallet supply chain in which pallets are shipped from origin to destination and then returned to the origin point for reuse, creating a circular flow. Closed-loop systems maximize pallet reuse, reduce waste, and lower per-trip costs. They require effective tracking, collection, and return logistics. Companies like CHEP and PECO operate large-scale closed-loop pooling systems across North America and Europe.

Collar

A hinged wooden or plastic frame that sits atop a pallet to form enclosing walls, converting a flat pallet into a container. Collars are hinged at the corners so they fold flat when not in use, and multiple collars can be stacked to increase the height of the enclosure. They are widely used in European automotive and manufacturing supply chains as a reusable, sustainable alternative to cardboard boxes or wooden crates.

Combo Pallet

A pallet assembled from a combination of new and reclaimed lumber components. Combo pallets offer a cost-effective middle ground between fully new and fully remanufactured pallets. They are built to meet specific dimensional and load-bearing specifications while using serviceable recycled components wherever possible. Combo pallets are among the most commonly sold pallets in the North American secondary pallet market.

Container Pallet

A pallet specifically sized and designed to optimize space inside standard ISO shipping containers. Common container pallet sizes include 43x43 inches and 48x40 inches, depending on the container width and the loading pattern used. Container pallets must fit through the container door opening and maximize floor space utilization when loaded side by side. Proper container pallet selection can significantly increase the volume of goods shipped per container.

Conveyor Compatible

A pallet design that meets the dimensional, weight, and structural requirements for reliable automated conveyor handling. Conveyor-compatible pallets must have consistent dimensions, flat bottom deck surfaces free of protruding nails, and sufficient rigidity to travel smoothly on roller or chain conveyors. Bottom board spacing and orientation are particularly critical, as gaps or misaligned boards can catch on conveyor rollers and cause jams.

Core Temperature

The temperature measured at the center (thickest point) of a piece of wood during heat treatment. Under ISPM-15, the core temperature of wood packaging material must reach at least 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. Monitoring core temperature with calibrated probes is essential for verifying treatment compliance. Failure to achieve the required core temperature means the wood is not properly treated.

Corrugated Pallet

A pallet constructed primarily from heavy-duty corrugated fiberboard rather than wood or plastic. Corrugated pallets are lightweight, recyclable, and exempt from ISPM-15 phytosanitary requirements since they are not solid wood. They are suitable for lighter loads and one-way shipping applications, especially in export markets where avoiding wood treatment costs is advantageous. However, they have lower load capacity and moisture resistance than wood pallets.

Crate

A rigid shipping container made of wood, typically with a fully enclosed structure of walls, floor, and lid. Crates provide more protection than open pallets and are used for heavy, fragile, or high-value items such as machinery, electronics, and military equipment. Like pallets, wooden crates used in international trade must comply with ISPM-15 phytosanitary requirements. Crates are often custom-built to the exact dimensions of the product being shipped.

Cross-Docking

A logistics practice in which incoming shipments are unloaded from inbound trucks and transferred directly to outbound trucks with minimal or no warehousing in between. Cross-docking relies heavily on standardized pallets that can be quickly moved by forklifts between dock doors. Pallet quality and dimensional consistency are critical in cross-docking operations because delays caused by damaged or non-standard pallets disrupt the tight scheduling.

Customs Broker

A licensed professional or firm that facilitates the clearance of goods through customs on behalf of importers and exporters. Customs brokers ensure that wood packaging materials, including pallets, comply with phytosanitary requirements like ISPM-15 at international borders. They handle documentation, duties, and regulatory compliance. Working with a knowledgeable customs broker is essential for avoiding shipment delays caused by non-compliant pallets.

D

Dead Stack

A method of storing pallets by stacking them directly on top of each other on the warehouse floor without any racking. Dead stacking is the simplest and lowest-cost storage approach but limits accessibility since only the top pallet in each stack can be retrieved without moving others. It is commonly used for staging empty pallets and for bulk storage of identical products where first-in-first-out access is not required.

Debarking

The process of removing bark from raw lumber before it is used in pallet manufacturing. Debarking is a mandatory prerequisite under ISPM-15 for any wood packaging material used in international trade. The process is performed using debarking machines that strip bark from logs or lumber. Proper debarking reduces the risk of harboring wood-boring insects and facilitates effective heat treatment penetration.

Deck Board

The flat boards that form the top and bottom surfaces of a pallet. Top deck boards provide the platform on which goods are placed, while bottom deck boards (also called bottom boards) provide stability and allow the pallet to be stored on flat surfaces. Deck board thickness, width, and spacing directly affect a pallet's load capacity and suitability for different applications.

Defect

Any flaw, irregularity, or imperfection in a piece of lumber that may affect its strength, appearance, or suitability for pallet construction. Common defects include knots, splits, wane (bark edge), decay, insect damage, and warp. Lumber grading rules define which defects are acceptable and at what severity for each grade. Pallet-grade lumber tolerates more defects than structural or appearance-grade lumber, keeping material costs lower.

Density

The mass per unit volume of a wood species, typically expressed in pounds per cubic foot or kilograms per cubic meter. Wood density is a primary indicator of strength and hardness, directly affecting a pallet's load-bearing capacity and fastener-holding ability. Denser hardwoods like oak produce stronger but heavier pallets, while lighter softwoods like pine reduce shipping weight but may require thicker components for equivalent strength.

Dielectric Treatment

A method of heating wood using microwave or radio-frequency electromagnetic energy to achieve phytosanitary treatment. Dielectric treatment was approved under ISPM-15 as an alternative to conventional heat treatment and methyl bromide fumigation. It heats the wood volumetrically from the inside out, achieving the required 56-degree Celsius core temperature more quickly and uniformly than convection-based kilns. This method is gaining adoption due to its speed and energy efficiency.

Dimensional Lumber

Lumber that has been milled to standardized widths and thicknesses, such as 2x4, 1x6, or 4x4 nominal sizes. In the pallet industry, dimensional lumber refers to boards and timbers cut to the specific dimensions required for deck boards, stringers, blocks, and other pallet components. Consistent dimensional accuracy is critical for producing pallets that meet specifications and function reliably in automated handling systems.

Display Pallet

A pallet designed for retail floor display, allowing products to be shipped on the pallet and then placed directly on the sales floor without unpacking. Display pallets are typically smaller than standard pallets (quarter-pallet or half-pallet size), visually clean, and may include printed graphics or branding. They streamline retail stocking by eliminating the need to transfer products from a shipping pallet to shelving.

Double Deck

A pallet configuration that features deck boards on both the top and bottom surfaces. Double-deck pallets (also called double-faced pallets) have bottom boards that provide a more stable base for stacking and improve weight distribution on racking and conveyors. The bottom deck also protects goods on the pallet below when loads are stacked. Most commercial pallets are double-deck designs.

Double Face

A pallet that has deck boards on both its top and bottom surfaces, providing load-bearing surfaces on each side. Double-face pallets offer improved stability in stacking and racking applications compared to single-face designs. They can be further classified as reversible (usable with either side up) or non-reversible (designed with a specific top and bottom orientation). Double-face construction is the standard for most warehouse and shipping pallets.

Drive-In Rack

A high-density warehouse racking system where forklifts drive directly into the rack structure to place or retrieve pallets on rails along both sides. Drive-in racks maximize storage density by eliminating aisles between rows, making them ideal for large quantities of identical products. Pallets used in drive-in racks must have precise dimensions and strong bottom decks, as the rails support the pallet by its bottom deck boards rather than its stringers.

Drop-Frame Trailer

A specialized semi-trailer with a lower deck height between the front and rear axles, providing increased interior height for taller loads. Drop-frame trailers are relevant in the pallet industry because they allow double-stacking of palletized loads that would exceed height limits in standard trailers. Understanding trailer dimensions and pallet stack heights is critical for maximizing shipping efficiency.

Dry Kiln

An enclosed chamber used to dry lumber by controlling temperature, humidity, and air circulation. In the pallet industry, dry kilns serve the dual purpose of reducing lumber moisture content and providing heat treatment for ISPM-15 compliance when operated at the required temperature and duration. Kiln schedules are tailored to the wood species, thickness, and initial moisture content to achieve target dryness without causing defects like checking or warping.

Dunnage

Loose materials or custom-cut pieces of wood, foam, or other materials placed around and between cargo to prevent damage during storage and transport. In the pallet industry, dunnage refers specifically to wood pieces used to brace, cushion, or separate products on a pallet or inside a shipping container. Like pallets, solid wood dunnage used in international shipping must comply with ISPM-15 requirements.

Dynamic Load

The maximum weight a pallet can safely support while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. Dynamic load capacity is lower than static load capacity because the pallet is subject to additional stresses from acceleration, deceleration, turning, and uneven floor surfaces during movement. A typical GMA pallet has a dynamic load capacity of 2,000 to 2,800 pounds. Dynamic load ratings are critical for transportation and material handling operations.

E

Edge Board

A right-angle protective strip made from laminated paperboard or plastic, placed on the edges and corners of palletized loads to prevent strap damage and reinforce stacking strength. Edge boards (also called corner boards or angle boards) distribute the pressure from strapping or stretch wrap across a wider area, preventing the strapping from cutting into the product packaging. They also increase the compressive strength of a palletized unit load.

Engineered Wood

Manufactured wood products created by binding strands, fibers, or veneers of wood together with adhesives to form composite materials. Examples relevant to the pallet industry include oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Engineered wood products can offer consistent properties, efficient use of raw materials, and in some cases exemption from ISPM-15 if sufficiently processed. They are increasingly used in specialty pallet applications.

EPAL

The European Pallet Association, the organization responsible for managing the EPAL/EUR pallet pooling system in Europe. EPAL licenses pallet manufacturers and repair companies, sets quality standards for Euro pallets, and oversees the exchange pool that allows EPAL-marked pallets to be traded freely across European supply chains. EPAL pallets are among the most widely used standardized pallets globally.

Euro Pallet

A pallet conforming to the European Pallet Association (EPAL) standard, measuring 1200x800mm (approximately 47.24x31.50 inches). Euro pallets are the standard pallet in European logistics and are managed under a pooling system regulated by EPAL. They are block pallets with four-way entry and are designed to optimize loading in European transport vehicles and warehouse systems.

Expendable Pallet

A low-cost pallet intended for a single use, designed to be discarded or recycled after one shipping cycle rather than returned or reused. Expendable pallets are built from inexpensive materials such as lightweight wood, corrugated fiberboard, or molded pressed wood. They are common in export shipping where return logistics are impractical and in promotional displays where the pallet is not expected to survive beyond delivery.

Export Pallet

A pallet specifically prepared for use in international shipping, meeting the ISPM-15 requirements for phytosanitary treatment and marking. Export pallets must be made from debarked wood, treated using an approved method (heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation), and stamped with the internationally recognized ISPM-15 compliance mark. Non-compliance can result in shipment rejection, quarantine, or destruction at the destination port.

F

Face Nailing

A fastening method where nails are driven perpendicular to the face (flat surface) of a board into the component beneath it. In pallet assembly, face nailing is the standard technique for attaching deck boards to stringers or blocks. The nails are driven down through the deck board face into the stringer. Proper nail length, diameter, and placement pattern are critical for achieving the required joint strength and shear resistance in pallet construction.

Fire-Retardant Treatment

The application of chemical compounds to wood that inhibit or slow the spread of fire. Fire-retardant treated (FRT) lumber is used for pallets in environments with strict fire safety regulations, such as pharmaceutical warehouses, data centers, and aircraft cargo holds. FRT lumber meets specific flame spread ratings and can be required by building codes or insurance underwriters for certain storage applications.

Flat Rack

A type of shipping container with a flat base and collapsible or fixed end walls but no side walls or roof, used for transporting oversized or heavy cargo. Flat racks are commonly used in international shipping for items that do not fit in standard containers. Pallets loaded onto flat racks must be secured with lashing and dunnage, and the pallets themselves must be strong enough to withstand the stresses of open ocean transport.

Flush Pallet

A pallet where the deck boards are trimmed even or "flush" with the outer edges of the stringers or blocks. Flush pallets have a clean, uniform edge profile that works well in automated handling systems and racking. They are the most common configuration for general-purpose pallets and provide a neat appearance when products are stacked on the deck.

Fork Entry

The opening in a pallet through which forklift or pallet jack forks are inserted for lifting and moving the pallet. Fork entry dimensions (height and width) must accommodate standard fork sizes while providing enough clearance for smooth insertion. Pallets may have two-way entry (forks enter from two sides) or four-way entry (forks enter from all four sides). Adequate fork entry clearance is essential for safe and efficient material handling.

Fork Pocket

A reinforced opening or channel in a pallet or container specifically designed to receive forklift forks. Fork pockets provide guided entry and distribute the fork load across a larger area than open-bottom pallets. They are common in heavy-duty plastic pallets and metal containers where precise fork positioning is critical. Fork pockets improve handling safety by preventing forks from sliding through or damaging the load.

Four-Way Entry

A pallet design that allows forklift forks or pallet jack forks to enter from all four sides. True four-way entry is achieved through block pallet construction, where blocks replace continuous stringers, creating openings on all four sides. Some stringer pallets offer partial four-way entry through notched stringers, which allow fork entry on the stringer sides. Four-way entry pallets are preferred for tight warehouse spaces and automated handling systems.

Freight Class

A standardized classification system used by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) to categorize shipped goods based on density, handling, stowability, and liability. Freight class affects shipping rates, and palletized shipments that are denser and easier to handle generally receive more favorable classifications. Efficient pallet loading patterns that maximize density can lower freight class numbers and reduce shipping costs.

Fumigation

The process of applying a gaseous pesticide (fumigant) to wood packaging materials to eliminate pests. In the pallet industry, fumigation typically refers to methyl bromide treatment for ISPM-15 compliance. The process involves enclosing the wood in a sealed space and introducing the fumigant gas for a specified exposure period. Due to environmental concerns, fumigation is being phased out in favor of heat treatment in most markets.

G

GMA Pallet

The standard 48x40 inch pallet specification established by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (now the Consumer Brands Association). The GMA pallet is the most widely used pallet size in North America, accounting for approximately 30% of all new pallets produced. It is the default pallet for grocery, retail, and general distribution applications, and its dimensions are optimized for standard 53-foot trailer loading.

Gravity Flow Rack

A racking system that uses inclined roller or wheel conveyors to allow pallets to move by gravity from the loading end to the picking end. Gravity flow racks provide first-in-first-out (FIFO) inventory rotation, making them ideal for perishable goods and date-sensitive products. Pallets used in gravity flow systems must have flat, consistent bottom decks and precise dimensions to travel smoothly down the inclined rollers without jamming.

Green Lumber

Freshly sawn lumber that has not been dried, retaining its natural moisture content which can range from 30% to over 100% of the wood's oven-dry weight depending on species. Green lumber is heavier and more susceptible to mold, staining, warping, and shrinkage as it dries. While green lumber is less expensive and often used for economy pallet production, it requires careful handling and is not suitable for applications requiring dimensional stability.

H

Hardwood

Wood from broad-leaved, deciduous trees such as oak, maple, birch, and ash. Hardwoods are generally denser and stronger than softwoods, making them suitable for pallet components that require high load-bearing capacity and nail-holding strength. Oak is the most commonly used hardwood in North American pallet production. However, hardwood pallets are heavier and typically more expensive than softwood alternatives.

Heat Treatment

A phytosanitary treatment method approved under ISPM-15 in which wood packaging material is heated until the core temperature reaches a minimum of 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least 30 continuous minutes. Heat treatment kills insects and pathogens without chemicals, making it the preferred method for treating export pallets. Treated wood is stamped with the HT mark as part of the ISPM-15 compliance marking.

Heat Treatment Schedule

The specific time and temperature protocol followed during the heat treatment process for ISPM-15 compliance. A treatment schedule defines the kiln temperature ramp-up rate, the target core temperature, the required hold time at temperature, and the cooling process. Schedules vary depending on wood species, thickness, initial moisture content, and kiln capacity. Accurate schedule adherence, verified by calibrated temperature probes, is essential for regulatory compliance.

High-Density Polyethylene

A thermoplastic polymer (HDPE) commonly used to manufacture plastic pallets. HDPE pallets are lightweight, moisture-resistant, impervious to insects and mold, and exempt from ISPM-15 phytosanitary requirements. They are commonly used in pharmaceutical, food processing, and clean-room environments where hygiene is paramount. HDPE pallets can be injection-molded or structurally formed and are fully recyclable at end of life.

Hitch Plate

A metal connector plate used to reinforce joints in pallet construction, particularly where stringers are spliced or where additional shear resistance is needed. Hitch plates are pressed or nailed into the wood at connection points, distributing stress across a larger area and preventing joint failure under load. They are commonly used in heavy-duty and custom pallet designs where standard nail connections alone are insufficient.

I

Intermediate Deck

A layer of deck boards positioned between the top and bottom decks of a pallet, typically found in heavy-duty or specialty pallet designs. Intermediate decks add structural rigidity, distribute point loads more evenly, and increase the overall load-bearing capacity. They are used in applications where exceptionally heavy or concentrated loads would otherwise cause deflection or failure in a standard two-deck pallet design.

ISO Container

A standardized intermodal shipping container built to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specifications, used for transporting goods by ship, rail, and truck. The most common sizes are 20-foot and 40-foot containers. Pallet dimensions and loading patterns must be optimized for ISO container internal widths to maximize space utilization. Efficient pallet-to-container fit is a major factor in international shipping cost optimization.

ISPM-15

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, an international standard developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that governs the treatment of wood packaging materials used in international trade. ISPM-15 requires that wood packaging be debarked and treated by an approved method — primarily heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation — to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases across borders.

Jig

Kiln Dried

Lumber that has been dried in a heated kiln to reduce its moisture content, typically to 19% or below. Kiln drying is distinct from heat treatment for ISPM-15, though some kilns can achieve both purposes simultaneously. Kiln-dried lumber (marked KD) resists mold, warping, and shrinking better than green or air-dried lumber. While KD lumber is preferred for pallet construction, kiln drying alone does not satisfy ISPM-15 requirements unless the specific temperature and duration thresholds are met.

Kiln Schedule

A detailed set of operating parameters (temperature, humidity, air velocity, and time) used to control the drying process in a lumber kiln. Kiln schedules are tailored to the wood species, thickness, and initial moisture content to achieve the desired final moisture level without causing drying defects like checking, splitting, or case hardening. In heat treatment operations, the kiln schedule must also ensure ISPM-15 core temperature requirements are met.

Kraft Paper

A strong, coarse paper made from wood pulp, commonly used as a protective layer between products and pallets or between layers of palletized goods. Kraft paper prevents product surfaces from being scratched, stained, or contaminated by direct contact with the pallet deck. It is also used as slip sheets and as a dunnage material. Kraft paper is recyclable and provides an inexpensive protective barrier in pallet shipping applications.

L

Lateral Bracing

Structural members installed diagonally or horizontally in pallet racking systems to prevent the racks from swaying or collapsing sideways. Lateral bracing connects upright frames to each other or to the building structure, providing stability against seismic forces, forklift impacts, and uneven loading. Proper lateral bracing is essential for warehouse safety and is required by building codes and racking design standards.

Lead Board

The outermost deck board on each end of a pallet, running perpendicular to the stringers. Lead boards are critical structural components because they are the first point of contact when a pallet is pushed into racking or engaged by automated handling systems. Lead boards should be made from strong, defect-free lumber because damage to a lead board can compromise the entire pallet's integrity and cause handling problems.

Live Load

Lumber Grade

A classification assigned to lumber based on its quality, strength, and appearance characteristics as determined by standardized grading rules. In the pallet industry, common grades include #1, #2, #3, economy, and pallet grade. Higher grades have fewer defects and greater structural integrity but cost more. Pallet designers select lumber grades based on the required performance, application, and budget for each pallet component.

M

Manifold

In pallet industry logistics, a distribution document or system that tracks multiple shipments consolidated onto shared transport. A manifold lists all palletized loads on a truck or container, their destinations, contents, and handling requirements. Accurate manifolds are essential for cross-docking operations and multi-stop deliveries, ensuring each palletized shipment reaches the correct destination efficiently.

Marking Stamp

The official mark applied to ISPM-15 compliant wood packaging materials, indicating that the wood has been properly treated and meets international phytosanitary standards. The stamp includes the IPPC logo, country code, producer number, treatment code (HT for heat treatment, MB for methyl bromide, DH for dielectric heating), and the debarked (DB) indicator. The marking stamp must be legible, permanent, and placed in a visible location on at least two opposite sides of the pallet.

Methyl Bromide

A chemical fumigant historically used to treat wood packaging materials for phytosanitary compliance under ISPM-15. Methyl bromide (MB) is an ozone-depleting substance regulated under the Montreal Protocol, and its use has been banned or restricted in many countries including all EU member states. While still technically permitted under ISPM-15, most international markets prefer or require heat treatment instead.

Moisture Content

The amount of water present in lumber, expressed as a percentage of the wood's oven-dry weight. Moisture content is a critical quality parameter in pallet manufacturing, affecting weight, strength, dimensional stability, mold susceptibility, and heat treatment effectiveness. Kiln-dried pallet lumber typically has 19% or less moisture content, while green lumber may exceed 50%. Excessive moisture leads to heavier pallets, mold growth, and product contamination risks.

Molded Pallet

A pallet manufactured by compressing and molding wood fibers, recycled plastic, or other composite materials into shape under heat and pressure. Molded pallets are lightweight, consistent in dimensions, nestable, and often exempt from ISPM-15 requirements since the manufacturing process eliminates pest risks. They are popular for export shipping, air freight, and applications where pallet weight is a major cost factor.

Multi-Trip Pallet

A pallet designed and built to withstand multiple shipping and handling cycles before requiring repair or replacement. Multi-trip pallets are constructed from higher-grade lumber with more robust fastening than expendable pallets, representing a middle ground between one-way and heavy-duty captive pallets. They are common in domestic shipping where pallets are returned through informal exchange or reverse logistics channels.

Nail Gun

A pneumatic, electric, or gas-powered tool used to drive nails into wood at high speed. Nail guns are the primary fastening tool in pallet manufacturing, enabling rapid assembly of deck boards to stringers and blocks. Nestable Pallet

A pallet designed so that empty pallets can nest inside each other, stacking compactly by overlapping rather than just sitting on top of one another. Nestable pallets typically have a nine-leg design without a bottom deck, allowing the legs of one pallet to fit into the spaces of the pallet below. This design dramatically reduces the storage and transportation space required for empty pallets — a stack of nestable pallets occupies about one-third the space of conventional pallets.

Nesting

The ability of empty pallets to stack inside each other in a compact, overlapping arrangement. Nesting is a key feature of certain pallet designs, particularly nine-leg plastic pallets and some press-wood pallets. A higher nesting ratio (more pallets per stack height) reduces the cost of storing and transporting empty pallets. Nesting capability is especially valued in reverse logistics, where returning empty pallets efficiently is a significant cost factor.

Notch

A rectangular or shaped cutout in a pallet stringer that provides clearance for forklift fork entry from the stringer side. Standard notches are typically about 9 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep, allowing partial four-way access to stringer pallets. Each stringer usually has two notches. The size and shape of notches must accommodate standard fork dimensions while maintaining sufficient stringer cross-section for structural integrity.

Notched Stringer

A pallet stringer that has been cut with notches (typically two per side) to allow partial forklift fork entry from the stringer side of the pallet. Notched stringers convert a two-way entry stringer pallet into a partial four-way entry pallet, increasing handling flexibility. The notches reduce the stringer's structural capacity somewhat, so notched stringer pallets typically have lower load ratings than full stringer pallets of the same dimensions.

One-Way Pallet

A pallet intended for a single trip from shipper to receiver, not designed for return or reuse in a closed-loop system. Overhang

The portion of a product load that extends beyond the edges of the pallet deck. Excessive overhang creates stability risks, can cause product damage during handling, and may prevent proper racking. Industry best practices recommend no more than one inch of overhang on any side. Overhang also refers to wing pallet designs where the deck boards intentionally extend past the stringers to support specific product dimensions.

Pallet

A flat transport structure, typically made of wood, that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, pallet jack, or other jacking device. The most common pallet size in North America is the 48x40 inch GMA pallet.

Pallet Collar

A hinged wooden frame that attaches to the top of a pallet to create enclosed sidewalls, converting a flat pallet into a box-like container. Pallet collars fold flat when not in use and can be stacked to increase container height. They are commonly used in European logistics and automotive supply chains for secure, reusable shipping containers. Pallet collars protect products during transit and eliminate the need for separate boxes or containers.

Pallet Converter

Pallet Exchange

A system in which shippers and receivers swap equal quantities of pallets at the point of delivery to keep pallet inventories balanced. Pallet exchange (also called pallet swap) is common in European logistics under the EPAL system and in some North American distribution networks. The exchange model eliminates the need for pallet return shipments and maintains a circular flow of pallets through the supply chain.

Pallet Inverter

A machine that rotates a loaded pallet 180 degrees to transfer the load onto a new or different pallet without manual restacking. Pallet inverters are used when damaged pallets need to be replaced under a load, when switching between pallet types (e.g., from a wood pallet to a hygienic plastic pallet), or when the bottom of a unit load needs inspection. They improve efficiency and reduce injury risk from manual load transfer.

Pallet Jack

A wheeled tool used to lift and move pallets within a warehouse or loading dock. Manual pallet jacks use a hydraulic pump activated by pumping the handle, while electric (powered) pallet jacks use battery-powered motors for lifting and sometimes propulsion. Pallet jacks insert their forks into the openings between the top and bottom deck boards of a pallet. They are essential material handling equipment in virtually every warehouse and distribution facility.

Pallet Magazine

An automated device that stores a stack of empty pallets and dispenses them one at a time onto a conveyor line or to a loading station. Pallet magazines are essential components in automated palletizing systems, providing a continuous supply of pallets without manual intervention. They can hold dozens of pallets and are configured for specific pallet sizes and types. Magazine systems increase production line efficiency and reduce labor requirements.

Pallet Pattern

The specific arrangement of cases, boxes, or other unit loads on a pallet deck to maximize stability, space utilization, and shipping efficiency. Common patterns include column stacking, interlocking (brick-lay), and pinwheel arrangements. Pallet pattern optimization software calculates the best configuration based on product dimensions, pallet size, weight limits, and trailer dimensions. An efficient pallet pattern minimizes wasted space and reduces shipping costs.

Pallet Pooling

Pallet Spacer

A flat board, frame, or layer placed between stacked palletized loads to distribute weight evenly and protect the products below. Pallet spacers prevent the bottom deck boards or legs of the upper pallet from creating point loads on the products of the lower pallet. They are especially important when stacking loads with uneven or fragile top surfaces. Spacers may be made from plywood, corrugated board, or plastic.

Pallet Wrap

A general term for materials used to secure and protect goods on a pallet during storage and transportation. The most common form is stretch wrap (stretch film), a highly stretchable plastic film that is wrapped around the loaded pallet to hold items in place. Other forms include shrink wrap, which is heated to form a tight seal, and pallet netting, which provides ventilation for products that need airflow. Proper pallet wrapping is essential for load stability and product protection.

Panel Deck

A pallet deck constructed from a single sheet of plywood, OSB, or other panel material rather than individual deck boards. Panel decks provide a smooth, continuous load-bearing surface with no gaps between boards, making them ideal for small items, bags, and products with irregular bottoms that could fall through spaced deck boards. Panel-deck pallets are common in export and display applications.

Partial Four-Way

A stringer pallet that allows forklift fork entry from all four sides but permits pallet jack entry from only two sides. Partial four-way entry is achieved by cutting notches in the stringers, which creates enough clearance for forklift forks (which are narrower) but not for the wider forks of a pallet jack. This is the most common configuration for standard GMA stringer pallets and provides a good balance of handling versatility and structural strength.

Payload

The total weight of the goods placed on a pallet, excluding the weight of the pallet itself. Payload capacity is determined by the lesser of the pallet's load rating and the handling equipment's lifting capacity. Maximizing payload per pallet while staying within weight limits is a key objective in logistics optimization. Payload weight must also be considered in relation to trailer weight limits and road transport regulations.

PECO

PECO Pallet is North America's leading independent pallet pooling company, identified by its distinctive red pallets. Like CHEP, PECO operates a rental model where customers use standardized pallets on a per-trip basis. PECO pallets are high-quality block pallets with four-way entry, designed for the grocery and consumer products supply chain. PECO competes primarily with CHEP in the North American market.

Perimeter Base

A pallet bottom deck configuration in which boards run along the outer perimeter of the pallet, forming a continuous frame on the bottom. Perimeter base pallets provide excellent stability on conveyor systems because the continuous outer boards create a flat, even running surface. This design is commonly found in block pallets and is preferred for automated distribution centers where conveyor compatibility is essential.

Phytosanitary

Relating to the health of plants, particularly in the context of preventing the spread of plant pests and diseases through international trade. In the pallet industry, phytosanitary measures refer to the treatments (heat treatment, fumigation) and regulations (ISPM-15) designed to ensure that wood packaging materials do not carry invasive organisms across borders. Phytosanitary certification is required for wood pallets used in international commerce.

Platen

A heavy flat plate used in pallet manufacturing equipment, particularly in presses that assemble pallets or apply treatments. In molded pallet production, platens are the heated surfaces that compress raw materials into the final pallet shape. In nailing systems, platens provide a solid backing surface against which components are held during nail driving. Platen size and flatness directly affect the dimensional accuracy of finished pallets.

Ply Rating

A measure of the number of layers or plies in engineered wood products or composite materials used in pallet construction. In plywood deck panels, the ply rating indicates the number of thin wood veneers bonded together, which directly correlates to strength and rigidity. Higher ply ratings generally produce stronger, stiffer panels suitable for heavier loads. Ply rating is an important specification when selecting panel deck materials for pallets.

Point Load

A concentrated force applied to a small area of a pallet deck, as opposed to a uniformly distributed load spread across the entire surface. Point loads are caused by heavy items with small footprints, such as machinery legs, steel drums, or stacked pails. Pallets subjected to point loads require thicker deck boards, closer board spacing, or solid deck panels to prevent localized failure. Point load capacity is an important but often overlooked pallet specification.

Push-Back Rack

A high-density racking system where pallets are placed on nested carts that roll on inclined rails. Each new pallet pushed in moves the previous pallets back deeper into the rack. When a front pallet is removed, the remaining pallets roll forward by gravity. Push-back racks provide last-in-first-out (LIFO) access and offer higher density than selective racking. Q

Quarter Pallet

A pallet that is one-quarter the size of a standard pallet, typically measuring 24x20 inches (half the length and half the width of a 48x40 GMA pallet). Quarter pallets are primarily used for retail display purposes, allowing products to be shipped from the manufacturer and placed directly on the store floor or shelf. They improve retail stocking efficiency and are common in club stores, convenience stores, and promotional end-cap displays.

R

Rackable Pallet

A pallet specifically designed and rated for use in pallet racking systems, where the pallet spans across two rack beams with its load suspended above the floor. Rackable pallets must have sufficient bending strength to support their rated load without excessive deflection (sagging) across the span. This is the most demanding application for a pallet, and rackable load capacity is always lower than static or dynamic load ratings. Typical rackable capacity for a GMA pallet ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 pounds.

Racking

The practice of storing loaded pallets on elevated warehouse racking systems (pallet racks). Racking places unique demands on pallet strength because the pallet spans across the rack beams with its load weight concentrated on the supported edges rather than distributed across a flat floor. A pallet's racking capacity is typically its most demanding load rating, and not all pallets are suitable for racking. Rackable pallets must be specifically designed and rated for this application.

Radio Frequency Identification

A technology that uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects, including pallets. RFID tags embedded in or attached to pallets enable real-time tracking of pallet location, movement history, and trip count throughout the supply chain. RFID offers advantages over barcodes by allowing non-line-of-sight reading and simultaneous scanning of multiple tags. Major pallet pooling companies use RFID for asset tracking and inventory management.

Recycled Pallet

A used pallet that has been collected, inspected, and returned to service with minimal or no repair. Recycled pallets (also called recovered or reconditioned pallets) are sorted by size and condition, and those meeting acceptable quality thresholds are resold directly. The recycled pallet market is a major segment of the pallet industry, with billions of pallets recovered and reused annually in North America, significantly reducing waste and raw material consumption.

Remanufactured

A pallet that has been repaired by replacing damaged components (deck boards, stringers, or blocks) with serviceable parts salvaged from other pallets or with new lumber. Remanufactured pallets — sometimes called combo pallets — offer significant cost savings compared to new pallets while maintaining acceptable quality for most applications. The remanufacturing process involves sorting, disassembling damaged pallets, inspecting components, and reassembling pallets to specification.

Returnable

A pallet designed for multiple uses with a built-in system or agreement for return to the shipper or pooling provider after delivery. Returnable pallets are built to higher quality standards to withstand many handling cycles and are tracked through deposit systems, pallet exchange agreements, or pooling programs. The returnable model reduces per-use costs and environmental impact compared to single-use pallets, but requires effective reverse logistics to be economically viable.

Reverse Logistics

The process of moving goods, including empty pallets, from their final destination back to the manufacturer, distributor, or recycler. In the pallet industry, reverse logistics encompasses the collection, sorting, repair, and redistribution of used pallets. Efficient reverse logistics is critical to the economics of pallet pooling and reuse programs. The cost and complexity of pallet reverse logistics often determines whether a reusable or expendable pallet model is more cost-effective.

Runner

A continuous longitudinal member on the bottom of a pallet that supports the structure and facilitates movement across surfaces. Runners are similar to stringers but the term is more commonly used for pallets where the bottom support members are wider and serve as the primary contact surface with the floor, conveyor, or racking. In some designs, runners replace a bottom deck entirely, serving as both structural support and the base that contacts the storage surface.

Selective Rack

The most common type of pallet racking, providing direct access to every pallet position from the aisle. Selective racks consist of upright frames connected by horizontal beams, with each beam level holding one pallet deep. Shipping Container

A large standardized metal box used for intermodal freight transport by ship, rail, and truck. Standard shipping containers (20-foot and 40-foot) are the backbone of global trade, and pallet dimensions must be optimized for efficient container loading. The internal width of a standard container (about 7 feet 8 inches) is a key constraint for pallet selection. Proper pallet sizing and loading patterns can mean the difference between fitting two or three pallets across the container width.

Shrink Wrap

A plastic film that, when heated, shrinks tightly around the products and pallet to form a secure, tamper-evident enclosure. Unlike stretch wrap which relies on elastic tension, shrink wrap uses heat-activated contraction to conform to the load shape. Shrink wrap provides superior weather protection and tamper evidence but requires a heat source for application. It is commonly used for outdoor storage, high-value goods, and products requiring a sealed enclosure.

Single Face

A pallet that has deck boards on only one side (the top), with the stringers or blocks exposed on the bottom. Single-face pallets are lighter, less expensive, and use less lumber than double-face designs. They are suitable for light-duty applications, one-way shipping, and situations where the pallet will always rest on a flat surface. However, they are not recommended for racking or stacking because the exposed stringers can damage goods below.

Skid

A pallet-like platform that has no bottom deck boards, resting on runners or stringers that serve as the base. Skids are the historical predecessor to modern pallets and are still used in some heavy-duty applications. Because skids lack a bottom deck, they cannot be double-stacked safely and are not suitable for most racking systems. The terms "skid" and "pallet" are sometimes used interchangeably in casual conversation, though they are technically different structures.

Slip Sheet

A thin sheet of solid fiberboard, corrugated board, or plastic used as a pallet substitute. Slip sheets are placed under a unit load and handled by forklifts equipped with special push-pull attachments that grip the protruding edge of the sheet. Slip sheets are much thinner, lighter, and less expensive than pallets, and they save significant space in shipping containers. Softwood

Wood from coniferous (needle-bearing) trees such as pine, spruce, fir, and cedar. Softwoods are the most widely used wood type in North American pallet production due to their abundant supply, lower cost, lighter weight, and ease of nailing compared to hardwoods. Southern yellow pine (SYP) and spruce-pine-fir (SPF) are the dominant softwood species groups in pallet manufacturing. Softwood pallets are lighter but generally have lower load ratings than equivalent hardwood designs.

Solid Deck

A pallet deck constructed with no gaps between the deck boards or using a single sheet of panel material, providing a continuous flat surface. Solid-deck pallets are required for handling small items that could fall through gaps, for powdered or granular products in bags, and for clean-room and food-processing environments. They offer maximum load-bearing surface area but are heavier, more expensive, and may trap moisture compared to spaced-board decks.

Sortation

The automated process of routing palletized loads to specific destinations within a warehouse or distribution center based on criteria such as destination, product type, or priority. Sortation systems use conveyors, diverters, and scanners to identify and direct pallets to the correct staging lane or dock door. Pallet quality, dimensional consistency, and label readability are critical for reliable sortation. Non-standard pallets can cause jams and sortation errors.

Species Group

A classification that groups similar wood species together for grading and engineering purposes, based on comparable strength and physical properties. In the pallet industry, major species groups include southern yellow pine (SYP), spruce-pine-fir (SPF), and mixed hardwoods. Species group affects lumber density, strength, nail-holding ability, drying characteristics, and cost. Pallet design specifications often reference species groups rather than individual species to allow sourcing flexibility.

Splice

A joint where two pieces of lumber are connected end-to-end to create a longer component. In pallet construction, splices occur in stringers or runners when a single piece of lumber is not long enough to span the full pallet length. Spliced stringers are reinforced with metal plates, plywood gussets, or additional fasteners to maintain structural continuity. Splices represent potential weak points and must be properly engineered to maintain pallet load capacity.

Split

A crack or separation in wood that runs along the grain, caused by drying stresses, mechanical damage, or nailing too close to the end of a board. Splits are common pallet defects that reduce the structural integrity of deck boards and stringers. End splits extending more than a specified length are grounds for rejection in pallet quality inspections. Proper nail placement, pre-drilling in hardwoods, and use of appropriate moisture content lumber reduce splitting.

Spruce-Pine-Fir

SPF is one of the most widely used lumber species groups in North American pallet manufacturing, valued for its light weight, workability, and availability. SPF lumber is particularly dominant in Canadian pallet production and is commonly used for both deck boards and stringers.

Stackable Pallet

A pallet designed to safely support loaded pallets stacked on top of each other in floor storage applications. Stackable pallets must have sufficient structural integrity to bear the combined weight of multiple loaded pallets without collapsing or shifting. The bottom deck design must be flat and stable to distribute weight evenly across the goods on the pallet below. Static load capacity is the key specification for stackable pallet applications.

Stacking Strength

The maximum weight that can be safely placed on top of a loaded pallet or palletized unit load without causing damage to the products or pallet below. Stacking strength depends on the pallet's structural design, the compressive strength of the products, and the stability of the load configuration. Edge boards, top caps, and interlocked stacking patterns all contribute to increased stacking strength. This specification is critical for warehouse floor stacking and container loading.

Standard Pallet

A pallet conforming to a widely recognized dimensional specification, most commonly the 48x40 inch GMA pallet in North America or the 1200x800mm EPAL pallet in Europe. Standardized pallets ensure compatibility with racking systems, handling equipment, and transport vehicles. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognizes six standard pallet sizes for global commerce. Using standard pallets simplifies logistics planning and improves supply chain interoperability.

Static Load

The maximum weight a pallet can safely support when resting on a flat, level surface without being moved. Static load capacity is the highest load rating for most pallets because the weight is evenly distributed across the bottom deck. A typical GMA pallet has a static load capacity of 2,500 to 5,000 pounds. Static load ratings are relevant for floor storage and long-term warehousing applications.

Stevedore

A worker or company responsible for loading and unloading ships at port facilities. Stevedores handle palletized cargo using cranes, forklifts, and other port equipment, transferring goods between the ship's hold and the dock. The quality and consistency of pallets directly affects stevedoring efficiency — poorly built or non-standard pallets slow loading operations and increase the risk of cargo damage or workplace injuries at the dock.

Stiffener

A structural member added to a pallet to increase its rigidity and reduce deflection under load, particularly in racking applications. Stiffeners are typically boards or engineered wood elements placed between or beneath the deck boards, running perpendicular to the primary deck board direction. They distribute loads more evenly across the pallet span and are common in custom-designed pallets for heavy or concentrated loads.

Strap

A band of steel, polyester, or polypropylene used to secure products to a pallet or to bind palletized loads for stability during shipping. Strapping is applied with manual or automated tensioning tools and sealed with metal clips or heat welding. Steel straps provide the highest tension for heavy loads, while polyester and polypropylene are lighter and safer to handle. Proper strapping placement and tension are critical for maintaining unit load integrity.

Stretch Film

A highly stretchable plastic film, typically made from linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), used to wrap and secure products on pallets. Stretch film is applied by hand or with automated stretch wrap machines and relies on its elastic recovery force to hold loads tightly. It comes in various thicknesses (gauges), widths, and formulations optimized for different applications. Machine-grade film offers higher productivity for high-volume operations, while hand wrap is used for lower volumes or irregular loads.

Stringer

A continuous, longitudinal solid or notched board that connects and supports the deck boards of a pallet. Stringers are the structural backbone of stringer-style pallets, running the full length of the pallet and providing the framework that holds deck boards in place. Most standard 48x40 pallets use three stringers — two along the outer edges and one down the center.

Structural Grade

A lumber grading designation indicating that the wood meets specific strength and stiffness requirements for load-bearing applications. Structural-grade lumber is graded by certified inspectors using visual or machine stress rating (MSR) methods. In the pallet industry, structural-grade lumber is used for stringers, blocks, and lead boards in heavy-duty pallets where failure under load could cause safety hazards. Structural grading ensures predictable performance under engineering calculations.

Substrate

The base material from which a pallet or pallet component is manufactured. Common pallet substrates include solid wood, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), plastic, metal, and corrugated fiberboard. The substrate selection affects a pallet's weight, strength, cost, durability, environmental profile, and regulatory requirements. Each substrate offers a distinct set of advantages and limitations for different supply chain applications.

T

Tare Weight

The weight of an empty pallet without any cargo. Tare weight is subtracted from gross weight to determine the net weight (payload) of the goods on the pallet. Typical wood GMA pallets weigh between 30 and 70 pounds depending on construction and lumber species. Pallet tare weight directly impacts shipping costs, especially in air freight and weight-sensitive trucking lanes. Lightweight pallets made from plastic, molded wood fiber, or corrugated can significantly reduce tare weight.

Temperature Monitoring

The practice of tracking and recording temperatures of wood during heat treatment or of products during cold-chain transport on pallets. In heat treatment for ISPM-15, temperature monitoring with calibrated probes verifies that the required core temperature is reached and held for the specified duration. In cold-chain logistics, pallet-level temperature monitoring ensures perishable goods remain within safe temperature ranges throughout storage and distribution.

Thermal Treatment

A broad term encompassing any heat-based treatment process applied to wood packaging materials to eliminate pests and reduce moisture. Thermal treatment includes conventional heat treatment (ISPM-15 HT), dielectric heating (microwave/radio frequency), and kiln drying when performed at phytosanitary temperatures. The thermal approach is preferred over chemical fumigation due to its environmental friendliness and broad acceptance in international markets.

Top Cap

A flat sheet of corrugated board, plastic, or plywood placed on top of a palletized load before wrapping or strapping. Top caps distribute downward pressure from stacked loads, protect the top layer of products from dust and moisture, and provide a stable surface for stacking additional pallets on top. They are an inexpensive way to increase the stacking strength of a unit load and are widely used in distribution centers and warehouses.

Trailer Load

A full quantity of palletized goods that fills a standard semi-trailer (typically 53 feet in North America). Optimizing trailer loads by maximizing the number of pallets and their stacking height is critical to minimizing per-unit shipping costs. Standard GMA pallets allow 20-26 floor positions in a 53-foot trailer depending on pallet orientation and pinwheeling. Trailer load optimization involves balancing pallet size, stacking height, and weight limits.

Treated Lumber

Wood that has undergone chemical or thermal processing to improve its resistance to decay, insects, fire, or other hazards. In the pallet industry, treated lumber refers to wood that has been heat-treated for ISPM-15 compliance, pressure-treated with preservatives for outdoor use, or treated with fire-retardant chemicals for fire-sensitive environments. The type of treatment determines the pallet's suitability for specific applications and regulatory environments.

Two-Way Entry

A pallet design that allows forklift or pallet jack forks to enter from only two opposite sides, typically the sides perpendicular to the stringers. Two-way entry is characteristic of stringer pallets without notched stringers. While less versatile than four-way entry pallets, two-way entry designs are simpler and less expensive to manufacture and can be sufficient for applications where pallets are always oriented the same way.

U

Unit Load

A quantity of goods assembled and secured on a pallet to form a single handling unit for storage and transportation. The unit load concept is fundamental to modern logistics — by consolidating individual items into pallet-sized units, material handling efficiency is dramatically improved. A well-built unit load is stable, within weight limits for the pallet and handling equipment, and configured to maximize trailer or container space utilization.

Unit Load Device

A container or pallet specifically designed for loading cargo into aircraft. Unit load devices (ULDs) are standardized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and are contoured to fit the fuselage shape of cargo and passenger aircraft. ULDs include both containers (enclosed) and pallets (flat with netting). Aviation pallets are typically made from lightweight aluminum and have specific locking systems for aircraft floor attachment.

Upright

A vertical structural frame in a pallet racking system, consisting of two columns connected by diagonal and horizontal bracing. Uprights support the horizontal beams on which pallets are placed and transfer the load weight to the floor. Upright capacity, height, and depth are key specifications in rack system design. Damaged uprights are a leading cause of rack collapse and must be inspected regularly and repaired or replaced promptly.

W

Warehouse Management System

Software that controls and optimizes warehouse operations including receiving, putaway, picking, packing, and shipping of palletized goods. A WMS tracks pallet locations, manages inventory at the pallet level, and directs material handling equipment. Pallet standards (dimensions, labeling, barcode/RFID) must align with WMS requirements for accurate tracking. Modern WMS platforms integrate with automated handling systems, conveyor sortation, and transportation management systems.

Warehouse Pallet

A general-purpose pallet designed for use within warehouse and distribution center environments, optimized for racking, forklift handling, and conveyor compatibility. Warehouse pallets prioritize dimensional consistency, rackability, and durability for multiple use cycles. They are typically held to tighter quality standards than pallets used for one-way shipping, as they must interface reliably with automated warehouse systems and maintain performance through many handling cycles.

Warp

A distortion in lumber where the board deviates from a flat plane, caused by uneven drying, internal stresses, or grain irregularities. Common types of warp include bow, cup, twist, and crook. Warped lumber in pallet construction can cause handling problems on conveyors, racking instability, and uneven load distribution. Lumber with excessive warp is rejected during quality inspection. Proper drying practices and lumber selection minimize warp in pallet components.

Waste Diversion

The practice of redirecting used pallets and wood waste away from landfills through recycling, remanufacturing, composting, or energy recovery. The pallet industry has one of the highest waste diversion rates of any product category, with over 95% of pallets being reused, repaired, or recycled. Wood waste from dismantled pallets is commonly converted into mulch, animal bedding, fuel pellets, or engineered wood products. Waste diversion is a key sustainability metric for the industry.

Waterfall Edge

A rounded or curved profile on the edge of a pallet deck board that eliminates the sharp corner, creating a smooth transition from the top surface to the board edge. Waterfall edges reduce product damage, minimize splintering, and improve safety during manual handling. They are commonly specified for pallets used in retail display, food service, and any application where products or handlers come into direct contact with pallet edges.

Weather Resistant

A characteristic of pallets or pallet materials that can withstand exposure to rain, humidity, temperature extremes, and UV radiation without significant degradation. Plastic, metal, and pressure-treated wood pallets offer inherent weather resistance, while untreated wood pallets are vulnerable to moisture absorption, mold, and decay. Weather-resistant pallets are essential for outdoor storage yards, open-air dock areas, and supply chains where pallets are exposed to the elements.

Wing

The portion of a pallet deck board that extends beyond the outer edge of the stringer or block, creating an overhang. Wings allow products to extend slightly past the pallet's structural frame without resting on air, providing additional support for wide loads. Wing dimensions are specified per side (e.g., 1-inch wing) and affect the pallet's compatibility with racking and conveyor systems. Wing pallets are common in beverage and appliance distribution.

Wing Pallet

A pallet where the deck boards extend beyond the stringers or blocks, creating an overhang or "wing" on one or more sides. Wing pallets allow products to overhang the pallet structure without the risk of damage from contact with the stringer edges. They are commonly used for beverage cases and other products that are loaded to the exact deck dimensions. The wing design also facilitates the use of clamp trucks for handling.
